Just a short distance from Interstate 81 on the outskirts of
historic Carlisle PA, this park features spectacular mature
specimen trees growing on the former site of the estate of J.W.
Bosler. Original trees dating to the 19th century are combined with
new plantings of unique and rare species. Several specimens are the
largest known examples of their species in the state. Fuel, several
restaurants, a grocery store, and a small mall are located nearby.
Southbound on I81 take Exit 49, PA 641, and return northbound at
the same exit or, if continuing southbound, go to Exit 48, PA 74.
Northbound on I81 take Exit 48, PA 74, and return southbound at the
same exit or, if continuing northbound, go to Exit 49, PA 641.
Park at N 40 11.851 W 77 10.578.
Each significant tree in the park is identified by a placard which
includes an ID number. To locate the cache, you will need to hunt
for two specific trees in the park and insert the numbers on their
identification placards in the cache coordinates as follows:
To complete the latitude, find the Deodar Cedar, a native of the
Himalyas and put its number in place of the x’s in N 40 11.7xx. To
complete the longitude, find the Pa. Champion Hinoki Cypress and
put its number in place of the y’s in W 77 yy.550. Please stay on
the trails until you are quite close to the cache; bushwhacking is
unnecessary and destructive. The cache is a tupperware-type
container and is a normal-sized cache.
A sign at the parking area gives a brief history of the site.
Before or after locating the cache, take some time to explore the
trails of the park. Several impressive trees are located further
along trails beyond the cache location. The main trails loop back,
but there are unofficial side trails which lead who knows where. If
you take one of these, you may need to use your GPS or drop
breadcrumbs to find your way back! This park is privately
maintained so remember to cache-in and trash-out. Happy hunting!
