Achtercairn is one of the small settlements which makes up the wider village of Gairloch - the others being Strath to the west and Charlestown to the south. A series of paths wind their way across the hill which overlooks it, passing prehistoric roundhouses and some interesting geological anomolies.
Must of the information I've learned about this area has come from a booklet titled "Achtercairn Paths" by Jeremy Fenton. In addition to maps of the paths it has detail about the roundhouses and other archaeological features, the geology of the local and wider area and some of the flora and fauna you could expect to find.

There are two ways to access the geocache; one from the back of the GALE centre and the other from near the cattle grid on the A832. Walking from GALE centre to the Geocache site should take around 20mins.
From the GALE centre, follow the road around to the west until you spot a stile which crosses a wall. Head up the hill, following the small path through gorse arches until you reach clearer ground. Take the first noticeable path to the left - it will pass Roundhouse 2 at a corner. Continue a short distance to Roundhouse 1 - easy to spot as it is marked by a fencepost. The geocache is away from the roundhouse to the W and allows you to admire the view over the Loch. Please be careful not to disturb or damage the roundhouse remains as you explore the area.
