Geocache Description:

View towards the Geiranger fjord

Thousands of tourists stop here every year. Many of them are tourists on cruise ships carried here on buses, many others come her to view the cruise ships from above. This is a place where tourists from far away may look for chance to drop or pick up travel bugs and geocoins on a spectacular place, and a place where locals may drop travels bugs or geocoins in a hope they may be picked up by tourists from far away.

Road 60 is the main road on the inner part of the region, and has a long history of winter closures due to avalanches. The road was very narrow and curved, and the tunnels were regarded as a nightmare by many drivers.

Lots of work have now been done, and some more will be done, to improve the situation, and when finished in 2016 the several small and narrow tunnels and the roads between will them be replaced by two long tunnels. Which of course is a big benefit for people living here or passing the area regularly.

For tourist, this is not very good, the view from inside the tunnels is definitely less interesting. Therefore one have invested millions to build this wonderful viewpoint on Ljøen, with parking space for several cars and buses, and extended areas where many people at the same time can admire the view and also find information about the fjord and the surroundings.

The main parking space is on the southern part of this area, on the east side of the road (facing the fjord). The cache is by the secondary parking place to the north, on the opposite side of the road. You can go from the one to the other by crossing the road, but there is also a crossing under the road.

The northern parking area has an extra attraction due to its crossing of the Ljøen river, you have nice waterfalls on both sides of the road.

The northern end of this parking area also is the starting point for a hike along the old post trail. This trail leads you over a mountain pass with a small lake and down to the valley where the northern tunnel will end. This hike is highly recommended.

The cache is close to the starting point of the trail.
