This hotel dates back way before anyones living memory. It was built in 1853 by James L. Davenport. Many people from New York City and surrounding urban areas visited to go more into the back country for summers and for vacations. At the time the Davenport Hotel was not on Green Pond property and the lake and land owner Judge Andrew Cobb did not allow Davenports guests to use the lake and the facilities. This erupted into a legal battle on whether the lake should be public to anyone or private to the people that live there. In the fall month of November 12, 1890 thirty-seven years after it was built the hotel burned to the ground. The reasons are still unknown today but the back stone foundation is still intact. Since the hotel burned down and financial problems came upon Davenport there was no reason to build another hotel. This kept Green Pond lake private to the people who lived there and has never been apposed since.
