"The first settler near here was Jon Harder who arrived sometime in the 1890's. In 1901, Harder plotted a town just west of Lake Kahlotus which he named Hardersburg. Apparently the name did not catch on and soon the more romantic, Kahlotus, became the commonly accepted name for the new town." For many years, sheep were loaded here on special "sheep extra trains" to be taken to summer pasture. They were returned in the fall to graze locally during the winter months.
