Once upon a time in the mid-nineties, a footbridge used to cross Anglesea Road, alongside the railway bridge. But one midday evening, a man drove his low-back lorry northward along this road, towing a large, heavy, and high load. Coincidentally, at the same instant of time, the nearby Guildhall was filling up with guests for a local secondary school's annual Awards Evening, Pompey were playing at home, and a vehicle crash had closed a major road in the city. The lorry driver did not notice the footbridge and drove into it, moving the pedestrian bridge over a foot sideways off its footings!
Needless to say, the city then became totally gridlocked for many hours. A few days afterwards, the bridge was removed, and never (yet) to be replaced. In it's place is a (now very heavily used) pedestrian crossing.
And yes, our Awards Evening was over an hour late to start!
The 'bad ending' is that the gridlock meant I had to leave my car there overnight and walk home, getting there so late I even missed 'last orders' at a local hostelry! :-(
The 'good ending' is that the council either waived or did not issue any parking tickets that night! :-) Phew!
The higher difficulty rating reflects:
1 - very high number of muggle pedestrians that walk past this spot during most hours of every day (uni students, shoppers, office workers, tourists, and late-night revellers), and
2 - the T-junction upon which there is always a double line of cars waiting to pass through. So please, use super-high stealth mode settings (or just 'tie your laces')!
