Geocache Description:

Once regarded as an almost mythical destination hidden deep in the Grampians ranges, the Fortress is a giant rock formation which dominates the Victorian Ranges.

Be prepared for a strenous walk which will take your through rock corridors and sandy trails, to the remote section of the ranges which the Fortress caves sit. The views are spectacular and truly rewarding at this secluded castle. Be sure to be well prepared with water and food, sunscreen and a hat. Gaiters are also advisable.

The Fortress is quite popular also with rockclimbers who you may see scaling the cliff face.

You can find a downloadable track route for your GPS free from the Open Spaces website -http://osp.com.au/?page_id=1603. Download link #9 The Fortress.

Length: 10.8k return.

Time: 5 hours.

The cache

PLEASE TAKE CARE - THERE IS A CLIFF NEARBY - a wrong turn or fall could result in death.

The cache is a 50cal Ammo can sitting on a rock formation that is at the side of the Fortress. You will need to branch off the track and near the big cave you will see some climbing rock formations. The climb can be done with no hand climbing but you will need to be steady on your feet and aware of surroundings at all times as the cache sits a few metres away from some pretty steep cliff edges. You will need to make your way to the top of the rock formation in which the cache is hidden under rocks in a crevice.
