Geocache Description:

The Mandeville footbridge where this cache presides was constructed in 1874

The Mandeville footbridge where this cache presides was constructed in 1874 to allow school children to walk to the nearby Kaiapoi School. At that time it reached as far as Charles Street to bridge the swamp on the riverbank, a swamp that is now a beautiful rose garden. Kaiapoi has a proud history, Scouting in New Zealand started first in Kaiapoi, as did field hockey. Norman Kirk was one of the youngest mayors at 30 years of age and the 29th Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1972 until his sudden death in 1974.
