For over 60 years Gene Switzer Field was the home of the Monroe Fighting Hornets. On fall Friday nights this was the place to be in Monroe. In 2006 the Hornets moved to their new home a mile away. All during the summer of 2016 the stadium was demolished along with old Lemon-Monroe High School. Where the stadium once stood with frenzied fans shouting "Go Hornets" has now been turned into green space, where there are no more cheers. This cache is placed in honor of all who coached, played and cheered the Monroe Fighting Hornets during their reign at Gene Switzer Field.
