Geocache Description:

The question was posed by an earlier cache in the area  "Where are the flowers?"  Its 12 months now since I found that one and so  I decided to investigate just where are the flowers. This is the 4th  in a series of caches about the wild flowers of the area along Wildflower Drive. Sturdy footwear recommended .

Pelargonium rodneyanum

Pelargonium rodneyanum, commonly known as the Magenta Storksbill, is a member of the family Geraniaceae. Naturally occurring in fragmented populations within heathland, rocky outcrops, sclerophyll forest and woodland areas of South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria. P. rodneyanum is commercially cultivated for use as a colourful potted, rockery or bedding display plant.

An herbaceous perennial, P. rodneyanum reaches 45 cm in height, flowers during November through to May and forms vertical tubers as part of its root system. It has five petals that are deep pink in colour and irregular in shape and size. The two larger petals are marked with deep magenta streaks and are positioned slightly separate from the lower petals.

Derivation of the name: Pelargonium rodneyanum

Pelargonium - from the Greek word pelargos (a stork) with reference to its storksbill like fruit.

rodneyanum - thought to be named after Admiral George Rodney (1718-1792) who lead victorious English naval battles against Dutch, French and Spanish forces.

Most of the caches are located nearby dirt cycling tracks or the paved cycle track that is heavily used by people cycling to work and students going and coming from school. use care not to reveal the locations and replace each one as you find it. The tracks are used by runners and mountain bike riders on weekends so try not to wander on and off the tracks in case you have an unexpected meeting with someone. Each cache has a letter which will enable you to solve the co ordinates required for a msteryto be located in the same bushland reserve.

Enjoy the journey and remember this is the Australia bushland so expect to be sharing it with the native inhabitants and I have see on a couple of occasions a fox. Tread carefully and warily especially during the warmer months. Take a water bottle if doing this during the heat of the day. the nearby water race has water flowing sometimes, and although cooling is not for drinking from.. There are also old mine diggings around the entire area so not advisable to do in darkness.
