Geocache Description:

ABOUT THE NAME:

This was the site of our former geocache: mtn-mn Appreciation Cache GC39WAD. It had a nicely camouflaged ammo can with a log book full of  thank you letters which we were going to present to mtn-mn, when it reached 100 letters. mtn-mn was the geocache reviewer for all Mississippi geocaches for over a decade. Most of us owe him a BIG “Thank You”, for if he hadn’t so graciously donated  his time to review and approve all of the caches in our state we would not have been able to enjoy this fun hobby we all love.

It had a little over 80, so we were close to presenting it to him...then some malicious person stole it!

Ever since it was stolen we have been in a quandary about what to do about it. We didn’t want to have that happen again. So we have decided to place a new less conspicuous cache using a smaller container here for folks to find and place another one for mtn-mn somewhere “a little more secure and under the watchful eye of someone” as our new cache reviewer has suggested.

THE CACHE AND LOCATION:

Take I-20 to Exit 77, which is one of the Morton exits. This exit is about 18 miles east of Brandon. At Exit 77, take Highway 13 and head north about a mile.

The hide is on a public half mile long scenic drive road which takes you up a hill, past a public observation tower, over the crest of a higher hill, and back down to highway 13. The only traffic this scenic road gets is people who want to get out and look at the views from the hill or climb the observation tower (highly recommended) and so it has very little traffic. Parking is allowed along both sides of the road. So you can park right beside the cache location.

This container is within the public area of the overlook drive and is actually a bit closer to the parking spot than the previous hide we placed here. There is a slightly inclined hill down from the road to the cache location, but nothing that children and older people (I’m an older people!) can’t handle. There is a little brush and a few brambles, if you take the wrong path, so you have to choose the correct path.

OTHER CACHES NEARBY:

There are two other geocaches hidden right on this half mile road which you might want to get while you are here:

1. Our own Head East Young Man (GC2JTT6) (visit link) which is a quick and easy 1/1 Park-N-Grab and offers a great view over the tops of the trees toward the east.

2. Reglbgl’s very cool hide known as Overlook13 (GCW9H0) (visit link) which is a bit harder than ours, but a whole lot of fun to look for.

You are also on the edge of Roosevelt State Park (http://www.mdwfp.com/parks-destinations/ms-state-parks/roosevelt.aspx) which has 10 geocaches hidden along trails and by the lake. The park features boating, waterskiing and fishing on 160-acre Shadow Lake, primitive sites for tent camping, 103 developed and RV campsites, 15 cabins, a 20-unit motel, group camping in eight dormitory-style cabins, four named nature trails, a scenic overlook with views of Bienville National Forest, tennis courts, softball field, picnic areas and pavilions, playground equipment, visitors center, and an 18-hole disc golf course. So you could make a day of it there after finding our easier caches. There is a McDonald’s restaurant, a Subway restaurant, a local restaurant, and several gas stations and convenience stores just down the road for your convenience.

There are also about 15 more caches hidden in and around the city of Morton. So why not make a fun cache run to and through Morton some time.
