Geocache Description:

This is a 2 stage virtual multi-cache to take you to the second of the SwampFox mural caches. First find a secret word which will allow you to decode the clue and find the final location. To log your visit, have your picture taken in front of the mural.

Those who know Revolutionary War history, or just love reading about Francis “Swamp Fox” Marion, probably know of the Battle of Tearcoat Swamp. For those who do not, while billeted at Waccamaw General Marion learned Colonel Tynes with a party of over ninety passed through Camden where they drew supplies and new muskets. They were camped at the edge of Tearcoat Swamp (near the site of Victory Plains). He called a muster and with 150 men moved to Kingstree. He then turned west and moved swiftly toward Tearcoat. After scouting the encampment Marion split his force into three companies and attacked at midnight. The attackers killed six, wounded fourteen and captured twenty-three men. They also captured the food, baggage, ammunition, eighty new muskets and horses with saddles. However, Tynes escaped, but was captured a few days later in the High Hill.

Now you can be closer to where Francis Marion won yet another victory on our way to our national independence. This is a multi-stage virtual cache. The difficulty rating mainly is because the locations are a bit off the beaten path and a car is necessary. At the coordinates given, you will find a white tag on a pole. It may not be easily visible and you do not have to go on someone’s property to view it. Be sure you park your vehicle in a safe manner before you check it. That white tag will have a word or words on it that is 10 or more letters. Take the word(s) and put a number under each letter. Then in the coordinates given below, replace the letter with the number you now have. For example, if the word was EASY (I know it is only 4 letters), E=1, A=2, S=3, Y=4 and so forth.

Now take that info and use it to fill in the coordinates below by replacing the letters with numbers. You should consider taking historic US Highway 301. This will lead you to the location of the latest Swampfox mural. (the 33 and 80 are givens)

33° t g. h i e / 80° s n. i h h

To log your find, either have your picture taken in front of the mural or beside the nearby restaurant, the Chat & Chew. You don’t have to eat there (although it is pretty good) but many people tend to laugh at the name. While you travel historic 301, bear in mind that before the interstate, US 301 was the main artery between New York and Miami and was heavily traveled. Little towns, and diners such as the Chat & Chew, were common. With the interstate and people moving fast now, the number of these little towns and shops or diners have shrunk. I hope you enjoy the search and history and as more murals are added, I’ll post more links so hopefully there can one day be a whole “find the Swampfox murals” search.
