This is one of a series of paddle caches around Stonelick Lake. While placing these, I did not have to exit my kayak (the lake level was two inches below the top of the spillway).
ODNR permitted these caches because they can be grabbed from a boat. These caches may not be approached from land (with the exception of a few T4.5 caches which are permitted, but very difficult, from land). If I suspect a find has been logged on a T5 cache without use of a boat – it will be deleted.
Parking Coordinates for two kayak/canoe access points may be found at Stonelick Paddle Cache - Kayak/Canoe Put-in Multi and Stonelick Paddle Cache - Boat Ramp Multi.
The cache is NOT located at the listed coordinates. You will get the coordinates by successfully completing the Wherigo cartridge that may be found at Stonelick Paddle Cache - Wherigo.
For this Wherigo, you will be paddling your kayak or canoe along a 1/2-mile course starting near the coordinates listed at the top of this cache page. You will need to have previously downloaded the Wherigo cartridge and then start it when you have paddled into position at the coordinates listed at the top of this cache page. From there, you will be following the course shown below in the satellite view. In order to be eligible to find this cache, you must complete the 1/2-mile course in under 15 minutes (which works out to a 2-mph pace). If you do so, you will receive a completion code that may be entered at the wherigo.com site where you downloaded the cartridge and the coordinates for the cache for this Wherigo. Whether or not you complete the course in under 15 minutes (as long as you complete the course), you will receive the coordinates for the consolation/bonus cache, Stonelick Paddle Cache - Wherigo Consolation/Bonus.
Stonelick Paddle Cache - Wherigo - Zones
The Wherigo symbols in the satellite photo represent the outlines of the zones through which you must pass during this Wherigo. Here is a list of the zones and what happens in them.
- Start Zone - This zone is where you will begin the Wherigo cartridge. The Wherigo symbol in the center of the zone shows the location of the coordinates listed at the top of this cache page.
- Zone 1 - When you enter this zone, you will begin the 1/2-mile paddle, and the 15-minute timer will begin.
- Zone 2 - When you enter this zone, you will have paddled 1/8 mile. The Wherigo program will show how much time you have left to complete the last 3/8 mile.
- Zone 3 - When you enter this zone, you will have paddled 1/4 mile. The Wherigo program will show how much time you have left to complete the last 1/4 mile.
- Zone 4 - When you enter this zone, you will have paddled 3/8 mile. The Wherigo program will show how much time you have left to complete the last 1/8 mile.
- Finish Zone - When you enter this zone, you will have completed the 1/2-mile course, and the timer will stop. The Wherigo program will tell you whether or not you completed the course in under 15 minutes. If you did, then you will be given a series of screens showing you your completion code, the coordinates for this cache, and the coordinates for the consolation/bonus cache. If you did not complete it in under 15 minutes, then you will be given a screen showing the coordinates for the consolation/bonus cache.
A few notes about this Wherigo:
- You must enter each zone in order.
- The course is laid out along an ESE course (exactly 108 degrees) (toward the campground) from the coordinates given above. Stay approximately in the center of the lake as you paddle the course, and you will easily hit each zone. As you can see, the zones extend quite a ways toward each shore from the middle of the lake.
- After you enter the Finish Zone, whatever information you have been awarded (completion code, cache coordinates, and/or consolation/bonus cache coordinates) will appear on your screen and will also be stored as items in your inventory so that you may go back and look at them later if needed. I still suggest that you take screen shots of the information as it is displayed to be sure that you have the needed information.
- You may NOT save and resume this Wherigo cartridge unless you have completed the course (i.e., entered the Finish Zone). If you try to do so without having completed the course, the cartridge will not allow you to resume the Wherigo. You will have to start the cartridge over at the beginning of the course. This is necessary because this is a timed course. If, however, you have completed the course, you may save the cartridge and resume it later so that you may see the information (completion code, cache coordinates, and/or consolation/bonus cache coordinates) that was stored in the items in your inventory.
- This Wherigo cartridge was tested on a Garmin Oregon and an Android phone.
Now go have fun paddling Stonelick Lake!
