The Hudson River Waterfront Walkway starts at Exchange Place in Jersey City and travels north to the George Washington Bridge in about 10.5 linear miles. All along the waterway are artifacts from the waterfront's past as a hub of intermodal transport and oddities of its new role as a financial center and high-end residential living. The HRWW is the easternmost section of the Liberty Water Gap trail, which eventually will create a hike and bike friendly path across New Jersey. Depending on the weather and time of day, the Walkway is crowded with joggers, workers taking a stroll, or mothers pushing strollers. You will need to watch for muggles at all times!
This is a great series to do on a bike. If you do not have one, you can rent a CitiBike near the Exchange Place PATH station near the southern end of the series or the Newport PATH station at the northern end.
This is the eighth cache in this series to highlight this walkway. Newport Green is a unique oasis in the middle of the nearby high-rises. This park has everything: a playground, walking trails, a carousel, a beach, even free WiFi. Huh, a beach? Yup, you cannot swim here but you can put your toes in the sand and enjoy the view across the river from a beach chair. Opened in 2012, the Green is a 4.25 acre private park for residents and visitors which has been built with grants provided by Newport. Note that the park is only open from dawn to dusk but cache is available at all times.
Congrats to NYWanderer for the FTF in the driving rain!
