Imagine you are standing in front of the Library. Not simple libraries like the city library here in Uppsala or Carolina Rediviva, home to the famous Codex Argenteus and Cancionero de Upsala.
No, this is The Library, capital L and everything.
A couple to choose from comes to mind:
The Library Of Congress – This is probably on of the most famous and one of the largest library in the world. Open to the public, it is basically the national library of the United States. It’s also the oldest federal cultural institution in the country, and is home to more than 32 million books and 61 million manuscripts as well as numerous unique, historical documents.
The Vatican Library – Established in 1475, this is one of the oldest libraries in the entire world. It holds the oldest complete manuscript of the bible as well as over one million other books.
Yale University Beinecke Rare Book Library – This is the largest building in the world that is focused solely on the preservation of rare books and manuscripts and is open to the public.
And of course:
The library of Alexandria – The original Library of Alexandria was one of the largest and most significant libraries of the ancient world. It was dedicated to the Muses, the nine goddesses of the arts. The library was part of a larger research institution called the Musaeum of Alexandria, where many of the most famous thinkers of the ancient world studied.
But none of these libraries even comes close to the one in front of us.
This is a library that contains every single page that has ever been written, and also, every page that will ever be written.
There is the story of my birth (I checked), the story on how you came to buy your first car, the outcome of your kids very first date and the story of how your boss actually did get that grade in school.
As you can imagine, this must be a pretty big Library, and it is. After all, it contains somewhere around 102000000 books!
But if you ask the librarian to recommend something really interesting you might just find something worth reading.
