Geocache Description:

A chance to visit a wonderful piece of Alabama History and get a few caches

This cache is part of a series of North Alabama Civil War Trail. The North Alabama Bientennial Passport is available from http://www.northalabama.org/.

The tour will take you around north Alabama to visit 20 historic sites. It will not be necessary to pay an admission charge to find any of the caches although some may charge admission to tour their facility. A paper punch will be in the cache and should be used to punch the appropriate spot on the passport. If you choose to find the cache before all caches and the passport are available just punch a piece of paper with the cache name and date found, this will be accepted for your coin. 200 trackable geocoins are available to the first 200 cachers to complete the series. Several locations in North Alabama will have the coins and their location is on the passport page of the above link.

A mystery cache that will provide two punches for your passport. The listed coordinates take you to the Blue and Gray Civil War Museum housed in Parham’s Civil War Relics store. Not necessary to go in for the cache but a neat place to visit. To find the latitude of the cache with the punch you will use the street number above the door. There are two doors be sure to use the northern most door.

34 AB CDE N. To compute the minutes (AB) drop the middle digit and reverse the two remaining digits.  To compute the seconds subtract 10 from the number above the northern most door.

To compute the longitude of the cache walk north on Bank St to the Old State Bank Building and read the historical marker about The Old State Bank Building.  (34 36.850N 86 59.051W) This building is another unique piece of Decatur history and worth a look but not necessary.

86 AB CDE W to calculate the minutes (AB) add 24 to the year the building was erected and drop the 18. The seconds (CDE) are obtained by adding 642 to the original lot number of the 1824 Town Plan.

Do not forget to punch both the Old State Bank and Blue and Gray Museum on your passport
