Geocache Description:

Welcome to Belleville!

In 1879, the Belleville Fire Company was created. After two fires wiped out most of Main Street (1881 and 1882), Belleville purchased a Silsby Steam Fire Engine (like the one pictured below). A summoning bell was also purchased, for $149.50, to call firefighters when needed. It was tuned to the key of C and could be heard for 4 miles. We think that it sits outside the current Belleville fire department.

The Belleville Firefighters Memorial Park is located about 45 feet north of the cache.

Belleville factoid: The first newspaper in the area was the Palouse Gazette. The first issue was published on September 29, 1877. The early papers were often divided up into one third advertisements; one third world, national, and state news; one sixth stories, poetry, jokes, and cartoons; and the other sixth was county and local news. - from a book by Edith E. Erickson

Notes: You will need to bring your own writing implement to sign the log. (If you are working on the Belleville Photo Tour mystery cache - GC65WA0, then don't forget to look around at each of the Belleville cache locations for a possible matching photo object.)
