Geocache Description:

The listed coords are for the famous Zagreb clock in this lovely square. The clock is a very common place for people to meet. Have you examined the lovely granite at the base of the clock though?

English

I love studying Rocks and Zagreb has a lot of Limestone and Granite.

Granite is a coarse grained, igneous rock with an even texture and color. It’s composed primarily of quartz and feldspar, with small amounts of mica, hornblende, and other minerals. Granite was formed by molten rock (magma) material beneath the Earth's surface crust. As it rose, it cooled, and was under tons of pressure for millions of years, allowing it to form a unique crystalline granular structure. As the quartz, feldspars, micas and other minerals fuse into the rock, the granite gets its beautiful array of color and pattern.

To claim this earthcache as a find, please email or message the answers via my caching profile. Failure to submit answers will result in logs being deleted without notice.

(1) Measure the crystals and average their size. Do you think the grainte is coarse, medium, or fine grained by using the following scale. Coarse crystals over 5mm in length, medium crystals between 1-5 mm in length, or fine crystal less than 1mm in length.

(2) Now you have established the size of the crystals, determine if the granite cooled down slowly or quickly, explain your answer.

(3) What are the three predominant colours of this Granite?

(4) What do you think the mineral is that forms the colourless Crystal?

(5) On the Tram side of the clock you will see a small dark patch in the granite, what is the name given to this by geologists.

(6) Do you think the dark patch is a fossil? explain your answer.

(7) Not compulsory but would be nice if you can upload a photo of yourself or GPS at GZ.

Volim proučavanje stijena i Zagreb ima puno vapnenca i granita.

(1) Mjera kristala i prosječni njihovu veličinu.
