Geocache Description:

Meet the Locals He Tuku Aroha is Wellington Zoo’s love story to Aotearoa New Zealand and Wellington Zoo’s newest precinct. The space encourages people to explore, play in nature and create their own experiences, especially kids!

Native lizards are cool and cryptic and often hang out under the leaf litter on the forest floor. Check out the display of rare skinks and geckos.

Update 30 April 2023. The cache is no longer within the Zoo but moved to a hiding park outside, near the zoo entrance. Stealth required.

This cache was first placed by the Department of Conservation as part of Conservation Week in 2015. Conservation Week is an annual event normally held in September or October. In 2023 it will be held in August to avoid clashing with the General Election. https://www.doc.govt.nz/news/events/conservation-week/. Studies show spending time in nature improves physical and mental health and wellbeing. Get into nature during Conservation Week and experience it for yourself.

For Wellington Zoo opening hours and entrance fees see https://wellingtonzoo.com/

Access the cache from the small playground near the sports field and carpark area. Follow the fenceline. Be stealthy around closing times as you can be seen from nearby paths. Room for swaps and trackables.
