Geocache Description:

A five-stage multi that will allow you to learn some of the history behind Hunt's Mill in East Providence. After obtaining information from each of the four first stages and performing some simple math, you will be led to the fifth and final stage, the cache!

I just recently discovered Hunt's Mill when a friend of mine saw they had just completed some renovations here and suggested I checked it out. I never knew about the great trail they have that runs through here (which I since placed a couple caches along), but I also had no idea of the history behind this place.

This multi will take you to four informational signs located arounts Hunt's Mill. The first stage is located right by parking, and all the others are relatively close by.

The coordinates for the final cache are N 41° 49.JKL W 071° 20.MNO. Below are instructions for the information you'll need to take from each stage, and after that, how you'll be able to calculate using those numbers and some simple mathematics.

Stage 1: Mills along the Ten Mile River, a necessity of life for colonial settlements

The dam at Hunt's Mills provided power for grist mills, sawmills, and other small-scale operations that provided the necessities of life for colonials settlements like the one established as Rehoboth, later Rumford, in 16AB.

The grist mill continued to serve the residents of Rumford and nearby Seekonk until 18CD.

Stage 2: A century of water supply from the Ten Mile River

The incorporation of East Providence in 186E resulted from the settlement of longstanding border negotiations with Massachusetts.

In 19FG the town purchased and improved the water facilities at Hunt's Mills.

Stage 3: Canoeing on the Ten Mile River

Before the creation of the Turner Reservoir in 193H, canoeists could put in at Catlow's Canoe House on the Rhode Island side of the Hunt's Mills Bridge and paddle upstream all the way to the bridge at Newman Avenue.

Stage 4: Recreation and Amusement at Hunt's Mills

In 190I, the water company leased the amusement park to the Fay brothers, who built a spectacular new dancehall a few years before the United States entry into World War I.

Stage 5: The Cache!

The coordinates for the final are N 41° 49.JKL W 071° 20.MNO and can be calculated with the information you found above and the simple equations you'll find below:

J.) G

K.) C - I

L.) B + F

M.) A + D

N.) E

O.) H + E

A geochecker link has been provided below if you'd like to check your answers, and as always, happy caching!
