The cache is near the summit of Green Mountain which has a manned
fire tower. Harry Libby is the fire warden. (Note: Harry passed
away this spring. He will be sorely missed.) There are three trails
up Green Mountain. All of them are quite steep, so expect a really
good cardiovascular workout.
The jeep trail is off of Town House Road to Libby Rd. in Effingham.
This is the best way up in the winter, but is very eroded and rocky
so not my favorite in the summer. (Note about the jeep trail: The
tornado of July 24, 2008 went up part of the jeep trail. It is
amazing to see the damage. As of July 26, it was almost cleared for
hiking, but fun to push through anyway. Fortunately, the top and
tower are untouched by the tornado.) From the north side you can
park close to the Lakeview Neurorehabilitation Center. This would
be the shortest hike and you park 200 feet higher than the other
two trails. The third is the Dearborn Trail and is not on the topo
map. You park at the “end “ of Hobbs Road (dirt), in a
grassy area across the way from a relatively new house. The land is
private and for sale, but I’ve never had a problem parking
here and it is the trailhead. The coords for this parking spot are:
N43° 45.477 W071° 01.115. There is a benchmark in the summit area
for those of you hunting for them. The cache is close to one of the
trails. The cache starts out with: bangle bracelets, a super ball,
alien stamp, bird whistle, heavy equip. toy, bubbles, a science
bumper sticker, a piece of calcite, some stickers, and diffraction
grating glasses.
