Geocache Description:

This is located at the turnoff to Shirt Tail Canyon Road which eventually leads to Pinnacles National Park.  A name like "Shirt Tail Canyon" didn't escape John Steinbeck's scruntiny...in the first chapter of East of Eden he exclaimed, "You can name anything San Lorenzo...but Shirt Tail Canyon is something quite different."   Other sources state that Shirt Tail Canyon is "...a frontier name, usually explained by some colorful story without much authentication."

There is also a minor controversy on how this name is suppose to be spelled.   GoogleEarth has it as "Shirtail Canyon"...Monterey County Place Names:  A Geogarphical Dictionary" refers to it as "Shirttail Gulch."    As this is my Steinbeck Cache Series, I am going to spell it "Shirt Tail Canyon" like Steinbeck did....However, you spell it...ENJOY!

CONGRATS TO MRJIM005 FOR THE FTF!!!
