This cache, placed with permission from the Village of East Aurora, is located in the Sinking Ponds Nature Preserve, located just off of the Pine Street extension in East Aurora. This site is another of those “little known jewels” of Western New York. The beauty of this site will truly amaze you! The Sinking Ponds Nature Sanctuary is a unique area of woods and natural ponds within the village of East Aurora. This glacially formed area once provided the site for early Indian settlements. Today the Ponds feature walking trails with a number of trees and plants identified for visitors.
The Sinking Ponds name is derived from 26 bridges which reportedly sank into a swampy area here between 1849 and 1913 before the road was finally relocated.
The more than 70 acres are owned by the Village of East Aurora and maintained by volunteer groups. There is no admission charge, but visitors are asked “to take nothing but pictures; leave nothing but footprints.” Following that lead, let’s all practice a Cache In, Trash Out philosophy.
To begin your quest, park at N 42 46.726 W 78 36.420. (You might consider bringing some cracked corn, bird seed, or bread to feed the dozens and dozens of ducks, geese – and even catfish – that you’ll encounter here.) After applying a liberal dose of bug repellent, you’re ready to enter the trails at the trail head (picture provided). Just follow the trail. There should be no bushwhacking necessary for this one. The cache is located within 30 feet of a main trail.
Finally, as you’re walking on the trails, take notice of the huge amount of beaver activity here. Not only will you see many small trees that have been gnawed down, but you’ll be surprised at the size of some of the trees that the beavers have started to work on. (The boys and I were lucky enough to see a beaver and a heron up close, while we were placing the cache.)
