Durrance Lake is in the Highlands west of greater Victoria. There is a small parking lot at the lake but otherwise it remains (thank God) pretty well a wilderness lake.
This is one of the hiking situations where I get totally turned around. Most of the time I have quite quite a good cognative map in my head so it always throws me when I am going in exactly the wrong direction that I believe I was taking. But the compass shows east when I think I'm going west. So, starting from the parking lot (N48° 32.979 / W123° 28.762) proceed EAST to the end of the lake. I would have sworn that I was walking west but I have faith in my compass. In any case you have no choise - the trail to the end of the lake is where you must proceed. At the end of the lake there is a small earth dam. Walk on it and here you should take a reading. My reading here is N48° 32.796 / W123° 28.348. It might be a good idea if you take reading here just for general agreement with the cords. Now strike east again into the woods. With a bit of luck you might find a trail of sorts. If you GPS reading was close to mine at the dam then there is a slight possibility that you will find co-ordinates similiar to mine. Bear in mind you are in the deep woods. Look for a large, very large rotten, very rotten stump. Bring your swim suit. If you don't find the cache, the swimming is excellent. My favourite spot after the Sooke Pot Holes. Lots of turtles at this end.
