On my way to the 'Back Door' cache near here, I noticed this plaque. After completing the Back Door cache I came back here to check it out. If you are interested, there is another plaque at the church with more information about the East Takaka Tramway but you don't need that to find this cache.
The published coordinates will take you to a plaque which marks the end of the line for the East Takaka Tramway. The Takaka Tramway ran between Waitapu wharf and East Takaka from 1882 to 1905. Once the timber had been cut out, the sawmills closed and so did the tramway. You can see from the plaque that in its time this area was a lot more built up than it is today.
