Geocache Description:

A spectacular coastal gorge in Torndirrup National Park, Albany

Not many people have even heard of Golden Gate Gorge (not to be confused with Golden Gates Beach in West Cape Howe), let alone been there. And yet it's one of the most spectacular parts of the rugged coastline of Torndirrup National Park, and in its own way is almost as impressive as The Gap. Strangely enough, it's only a hop-skip-and-jump away from the famous Blowholes, yet you won't find it mentioned anywhere, and few Albany locals seem to know about it or have ever been there. Tourists visiting the National Park typically go to the usual hotspots, but some of the best places are off the beaten path, and are not even advertised. Perhaps they don't want too many tourists making their way here? The coast here can be dangerous, although apparently Golden Gate Gorge is used for abseiling from time to time. It's certainly one of my favourite parts of the coastline in this area, known as Black Head, especially when the ocean is stormy. With this geocache, I'm giving you a chance to visit this local secret!

To get here, take the Blowholes Rd off Frenchman Bay Rd, park in the main parking lot, and follow the paved trail towards the Blowholes. After you descend a set of stairs, continue for a short straight stretch along the asphalt path, but exactly where the asphalt makes a sharp 45 degree turn right, you need to look for a small gap in the bushes on your left (I've marked it as a waypoint). Here you'll find a small path that will take you directly down to Golden Gate Gorge - look for a large sign close to the gorge, and do read the safety information there. Access to the cache is quite safe, but I would not recommend taking young children here. At no point do you need to go near the edge, but please do be careful as you make your way towards where the cache is located, because it is hidden on the other side of the gorge. From your car, it should only take about ten minutes to walk to GZ.

As you head to the cache, you should have an excellent view of the Golden Gate Gorge itself, which is longer and narrower than The Gap. Because the gorge is almost perpendicular to the direction that the swell comes from, there's not usually much spray from waves going into it. However the ocean pounding on the rocks on the other side of GZ can be truly spectacular on a rough day, making this an excellent spot to sit and be impressed by the beauty of the coast and power of the ocean.

Cache is a clear plastic 1L sistema container. We have deliberately made it fairly easy to find (see the hint for an obvious clue), because this cache is all about the location. We placed it here to share another jewel of the rainbow coast, and to help bring other geocachers here to enjoy this wonderful spot.
