Geocache Description:

With thanks to the Romsey & Lancefield Districts Historical Society Inc. for the information contained in this cache.

The European settlement of Romsey developed as a result of passing trade between Melbourne and the Bendigo and McIvor goldfields. By the 1850s a small community was established beside Five Mile Creek.

Romsey has a wonderful wide tree lined Main Street with service roads and historic buildings along both sides but the history extends further than the strip of bitumen you drive through going somewhere else.

The magnificent Huntingdon Elm trees which line the main street of Romsey were the vision of William White, an early storekeeper. The trees were planted in 1874.

The Catholic Church              85 Main Street

The Uniting Church                25 Pohlman Street
