Geocache Description:

St Nicholas Church.

St. Nicholas church was a possession of Llanthony Priory until the Dissolution.

Originally Norman, it has a mid 13th C chancel, west tower and sout transept. The tower has three stages with battlements but no buttresses. The top stage is later - probably late 16th C.

Above the north doorway is a reset Norman tympanum with two affronted lions. The font is a Norman tub-shaped bowl on a two-tier stone pedestal.

A charter of the late 14th century tells of rights and privileges in the church and adjoining field granted to the Knights Templars.

When none of the parishoners could read, the walls would have been decorated with pictures illustrating the bible stories. Traces of medieval wal painting of St Nicholas appears faintly on the east wall of the transept, all that is left of the many colourful murals that must have decorated the church before the vandalism of the Reformation.

There were originally four bells, much admired by the neighbouring village of Avening who had five bells of their own but coveted a sixth. One night in 1830 the Avening bel ringers sneaked up to Cherington when the moon was full and wheeled one of the bells away to Avening in a hand barrow across the field called Gassons and then by Barrow Tump to Mays Lane where they had a bigger cart waiting. They hid the bell under the communion table in Avening Church and the following Saturday night hung it in Avening tower.
Next day, the new bell was rung with the other five, but sadlythe result was horribly discordant as the ringers had selected the wrong bell.
The secret was out and the Cherington ringers came at dead of night and stole back their bell in time for the next Sunday service. The five Avening ringers were sent to Horsley Gaol and receive six months hard labour.

When the mounting in the tower became unsafe the bells fell silent, until in 1990 the parishoners unanimously decided to raise money for their restoration. At the same time a fifth bell was given by the Gloucester and Bristol Association of bellringers. On the 5th June 1992 the bells were re dedicated and a band of six volounteers gathered to learn how to ring them. Now the bells are rung regularly for all occasions.

The nave windows date to 1881 and are by Waller & Son. There is stained glass in the church - the east window is by Clayton & Bell, 1927; and there are others by Hardman 1927, and James Powell & Sons 1865.
