Situado sobre un cortado del río Escalote y con origen en la Edad de Hierro se comienza a tener noticias de este enclave en el siglo X, en el que los árabes destruyen y fortifican de nuevo esta plaza. Adquiere gran importancia durante los siglos X y XI por formar parte de la línea defensiva del Duero. Pasa sucesivamente de manos cristianas a musulmanas y viceversa, hasta el año 1085 en que Alfonso VI toma Toledo , en que pasa a ser definitivamente enclave cristiano, aunque los musulmanes mantienen el control sobre Medinaceli. 
Siendo varias veces disputada por los señores cristianos es en el siglo XIV cuando pasa a manos de la familia Tovar, que levanta el castillo en el siglo XV sobre el original, del que no quedan restos. Posteriormente se reconstruye el castillo en el S. XVI, conservando sólo algunos lienzos, un aljibe y la torre del homenaje de la anterior construcción del S.XV.
La torre del homenaje es de planta rectangular, con garitones en cada esquina y en el centro de cada lado, y tiene los escudos de los Tovar y Velasco. Se conserva una poterna (puerta menor) que da directamente al tajo del río Escalote, en la cara norte del castillo.
El imponente nuevo castillo de inspiración artillera, construido e inacabado por Benedetto de Rávenna según varios autores, y que rodea a la antigua fortificación, forma un rectángulo de gruesos y bajos lienzos con tambores en cada esquina, estando el de noroeste separado del cuerpo del castillo por un pasillo, sin llegar a tener funciones de torre albarraba, sino más bien para mejorar los ángulos de tiro de la artillería. Todo el cerro está rodeado por una muralla de tambores y lienzos.
La construcción de un palacio en la explanada sur del castillo hace que se abandone, utilizándose como cárcel, hasta que un incendio lo arruina. El palacio junto con sus jardines desaparecerá, salvo su fachada sur, incendiado por los franceses en su retirada durante la guerra de la Independencia.

Located on the verge of the cliff over the Escalote river, originally from the Iron Age, the first notice of this site comes in the X century, when the Arabs destroyed and fortified this place again. The castle gets great importance during the X and XI centuries as part of the Duero river defensive line.
It passes alternatively from christian to muslim hands until 1085 when king Alfonso VI conquers Toledo city, and this region becomes definitely a christian enclave, although Muslims maintain control over Medinaceli.
Being repeatedly disputed by Christian knights, it is in the XIV century when the castle passed to the Tovar family that builds the castle in the XV century on the original construction, from which nothing remains.
Later the castle was rebuilt in the XVI century, keeping only some paintings, a cistern and the main tower from the previous construction.
The main tower is rectangular, with sentries at each corner and in the center of each side, and it has the shields of Tovar y Velasco Houses. One little gate leads directly to the cliff of Escalote River, on the north side of the castle.
The imposing New Castle, made with artillery inspiration, was built and unfinished by Benedetto Ravenna, according to several authors . It surrounds the old fortress, that forms a rectangle of thick canvases with drums and bass on every corner, while the Northwest separate the body castle with a corridor, without actually having watchtower functions, but improving the angles of artillery fire. The entire hill is surrounded by a wall of drums and canvases.
The construction of a palace in the southern esplanade of the castle leads to its abandonment , being used from that time as a prison until a fire destroys it.
The palace with its gardens would disappear also, except its southern facade, burned by the French troops in their withdrawal during the Independence war.
