Vyhasnuté plamienky
Introdukcia
Žijem v blízkosti už pár rokov a tiež som o tomto mieste donedávna nevedel.
Cintorín a židovstvo v Hornom Bare
Úradne židovská obec spadala do Dunajskej Stredy.

Extinct flames
Introduction
This geocache will bring you to a long-forgotten jewish cemetery near village of Horný Bar. Only few know what is hidden in that little forest in the middle of the field. There is a rare relic from first half of 18th century. I live in the vicinity for couple of years and I discovered that place not so long ago.
Cemetery and Judaism in Horný Bar
The cemetery is in bad shape. What welcomes you is a sad view of broken tombstones, some "richer" graves have been already excavated and "explored". The cemetery is, besides the registry office an evidence, that Jews once lived in Horný Bar. It could have been presumably 270 years ago. The oldest preserved is Mrs Malka's grave from 1749. The second oldest grave is from 1781. There are other graves from the beginning of the 19th century.
One can find lots of names on tombs, legible are Deutsch (one of the oldest families that live here), Baka, Kohen, Adler, Steiner, Rosenberger, Paschkes, Fleischmann, Fuchs, etc. In addition to Hebrew language, tombstones engraved in German and Hungarian were also found.
Officially a Jewish town belonged to Dunajská Streda. According to statistics of ethnographer Elek Fényes from 1837 lived in Horný Bar 144 Jews. Statistic report from 1881 stated 96 Jews. It is known that Jews lived here in the early 1700's.
Epilogue
This small cemetery deserves that somebody could save it, not only for its historical value. Similar case happened in a near town Holice, where a cemetery was rescued and reconstructed, thanks to a sponsor who's relatives have graves there. Unfortunatelly, the cemetery near Horný Bar still awaits its saviour. Only few can afford to contribute finacially, but anyone can show a little humanity.
When you come to this memorial place, don't rush. Try to think of forgotten destinies that are burried here. Show some respect to people, who are long forgotten by everyone.
I will bring at least a candle...
Few more words about the cache...
Regular size cache. Best time to come here is when it's dry and the sun is shining. There is no road, not even a dirt road leading here. The only way how to approach this place is accross the fields. Be considerate to work of farmers and choose a shortest way. Please don't touch the tombstones (not necesserary to find the cache) and be respectful.
The cache is hidden on the periphery of the cemetery and it's freely accesible. I filled it with some interesting items for exchange. Wishing you lot of joy with the found cache!
