Alfred Lawrence "Doc" Freeman, Civil War Veteran Multi-Cache

You are seeking a short two stage multi cache that begins at the grave marker for Alfred Lawrence “Doc” Freeman, a Veteran of the Civil War.

As a Private in Company F of the 7^th Alabama Cavalry, Freeman fought at several places, the worst being at the Battle of Franklin, just south of Nashville.

The Confederate charge at Franklin was larger, lasted longer and was deadlier than Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg. At Gettysburg, 12,000 Confederates advanced over a mile of open ground after a 150 gun bombardment of the Union line. The Confederates reached their objective and held it for 30 minutes before being repulsed.

In comparison, the Confederates at Franklin were supported by one battery as 20,000 confederates advanced over 2 miles of open ground. They managed to pierce the Union line made up of 3 tiers of breastworks and held the position for over 3 hours before being repulsed.

The Battle of Franklin was where the most Confederate Generals killed than in any other battle. With six generals killed, no other engagement of the war saw as much devastation in the Confederate general officer corps as did the Battle of Franklin.

The 7^th Alabama Cavalry suffered severely in killed and wounded.

Private Freeman survived this battle and the war; he led a long life in the Tuscaloosa area, dying at the age of 85.
