The Church
The church is dedicated to St.Weonards (uniquely I believe) and, as mentioned, is situated in the village of the same name, easily accessable on the A466 Monmouth/Hereford road.
Most of the current building (including the oak screens) date from the 16th century when the tower, south porch and north aisle were added but parts such as the chancel arch, part of the south wall, and the inner doorway of the porch, date from the 13th and 14th centuries, and it has been recorded that there was a building on the site as long ago as 1155! As we come forward in time, the pulpit is 17th century and the south vestry and chancel are from 1884.
St. Weonard himself is thought to have been a local saint, indeed there used to be stained glass in one of the church windows (sadly destroyed now) that showed him with a woodcutter's axe living as a hermit, and just to the south of the churchgrounds is a tump (the wooded one opposite the car parking) which is a said to have been the site of his burial. Excavations in 1885 though found two Bronze Age cremation burials within. This mound was also utilized as a Norman motte for a small wooden castle and more recently as a site for other village activities and morris dancing!
The Cache
A hanging Bison-type container just outside the church grounds - just walk through the church grounds to the footpath stile on the other side. I have placed this as an easy cache and dash but a wander round the church is a pleasant ten minutes if you have time. Not accessible for wheelchairs I'm sorry. Parking is as the parking waypoint which is a hundred foot or so up the road - please do not park right in front of the church in the Church Farm grounds.
