Radviliškis minimas nuo XVI a. pradžios. 1567 metai laikomi Radviliškio įkūrimo metais, nors kai kurie šaltiniai nurodo dar 1529 metus ar 1539 m.

XVI a. viduryje vietovė priklausė Šiaulių ekonomijai, kurią valdė Radvilos. Nuo 1577 m. vadinamas miesteliu. 1667 m. Radviliškio dvaras priklausė Vilniaus vaivadai kunigaikščiui Jonušui Radvilai. 1687 m. gavo turgaus privilegiją,  1710 m. – miesto teises (nors 1708–1710 m. maro metu išmirė visi gyventojai).

Radviliškio geležinkelio mazgas

XVIII a. Radviliškis pamažu atsigavo, o ypač sparčiai ėmė augti 1868–1870 m. nutiesus Liepojos-Romnų geležinkelio atšaką Daugpilis-Radviliškis ir čia buvo įkurta geležinkelio stotis. Per I pasaulinį karą nutiesus Radviliškio-Tilžės ir Šiaulių-Jelgavos geležinkelius, Radviliškis tapo svarbiu geležinkelio mazgu.

1919 m. lapkričio 22 d. ties Radviliškiu bermontininkai buvo sumušti Lietuvos armijos ir savanorių, bei  ėmė trauktis iš Lietuvos. 1924–1926 m. suteiktos miesto teisės. 1946 m. rugpjūčio 3 d. tapo apskrities pavaldumo miestu.

Radviliškis mentioned in the 16th century. 1567 is regarded to be year of the foundation Radviliškis, although some sources indicate 1529 or even 1539.

In the middle of sixteenth century area belonged to the Siauliai economy, owned by Radvilos. Since 1577 called town. In 1667 Radviliškio estate belonged to the Vilnius voivode duke Jonušas Radvila. 1687 get right to holding market, 1710 received city rights (although from 1708 to 1710 m. during plague died entire population).

Radviliškio railway junction

In the eighteenth century Radviliškis gradually recovered and began to grow rapidly, especially in 1868-1870 after built Liepaja-Romnai railway siding and Radviliškis-Daugavpils, here was founded railway station. During World War I was built Radviliškio-Tilsit and Šiauliai-Jelgava rail lines, Radviliškis became an important railway junction.

1919 22th of November near Radviliškis Bermondtists (united German–Russian West Russian Volunteer Army) was beaten by Lithuanins army ant volunteers and began to retreat from Lithuania. 1924-1926 m. granted city rights. 1946. 3 August became a county-controlled city.
