Henry Packer Deering Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

EChasC: I no longer live in the area, and have little or no reason to visit, and so can no longer maintain the cache. I have asked several times for someone else to assume ownership, but no one has come forward. The last person to attempt a find could not locate the cache. So, sadly, I assume it is lost and must archive this cache.

Geocache Description:

Henry Packer Deering was Sag Harbor's first United States Custom Master at a time when Sag Harbor was a more active port than New York City. His home/workplace, was relocated to its current location, and is now a museum. The cache is on the grounds of this historic building.

By 1789 Sag Harbor had more tons of square-rigged vessels engaged in commerce than even New York City. On July 31 of that year Sag Harbor was declared the first official port on entering United States territory. This is where ships would stop before sailing to New York City to finish their trip. With all the ships coming in and out of Sag Harbor the United States government decided that they should place a customs house in the town. Access to the cache is mostly level ground, and no bushwhacking is required to find it. Find Deering's home and explore the grounds.

This cache was formerly part of a six-cache geocaching game created by the John Jermain Memorial Library of Sag Harbor. The library program has ended and this cache is now maintained by EChasC.

EChasC no longer lives in the area and cannot maintain this cache with any regularity. So, please make sure you reseal the cache tightly, and replace it where you found it, making sure it is reasonably well hidden.

If you are able to assume ownership of this cache, please message EChasC here. Thanks.
