According to The South Fork Story by Frank P. Alcamo, a memorial to honor soldiers, sailors and marines who served during WWI was erected at the corner of Main and Maple St. in South Fork in July of 1927. Bronze tablets containing the names of the South Fork residents who served were placed on each side of the monument. A German Cannon that was captured during the war was placed on top of the memorial. A WWII veteran, Guy Glossi, remembers seeing the cannon there when he returned from the War in the 1940's. However, today, a large bell sits on top of the monument. After checking the library and talking to numerous sources, no one seems to know for sure what happened to the cannon or exactly where the bell came from. Some think the cannon was removed and sold for scrap metal. It is suggested the bell came from the original EUB church that sat on the corner across the street which is now the First United Methodist Church. Others believe it came from the fire hall. There in lies the mystery - What happened to the cannon and where did the bell come from???
