Montauk is best known for being home to Montauk Point Light, the first lighthouse in New York and the 4th oldest active lighthouse in the United States. Montauk is also the eastern-most point on Long Island and affectionately referred to as "The End".
However, there is a lot more to the history of Montauk besides the lighthouse. Montauk has been used as a base by the Army, Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force. Despite being just under 20 square miles, Montauk is home to six state parks. Montauk derives its name from the Montaukett tribe, an Algonquian-speaking tribe who lived in the area and were encountered by Dutch explorers as early as 1614.
