En 1982, il vainc son premier 8000m, le Nanga Parbat au Pakistan, et le 5 octobre 1995, il devient le troisième homme à avoir gravi les 14 sommets de plus de 8000 mètres en vainquant enfin le Kangchenjunga.
Le 28 avril 2011, jour de son cinquante-deuxième anniversaire, il fait une course au Grünhorn et fait une chute de deux cents mètres qui entrainera son décès.

Native son, this renowned mountaineer conquered the highest peaks on the planet, in the Andes and the Himalayas. First in his class at the mountain guide course, he began his career in the Swiss Alps.
