A traditional cache near the top of Newtimber Hill.
This cache is placed near the top of Newtimber Hill which is a flat topped part of the South Downs escarpment between the better-known locations of Wolstonbury Hill and Devil’s Dyke. Although the popular South Downs Way passes close by, it does not go up Newtimber Hill, so there are far fewer visitors here apart from locals with dogs. It is in the South Downs National Park and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest where rare species of butterfly can be found, as well as unusual plantlife. The site is managed carefully by the National Trust, and a herd of cattle browse across the Downland - so mind your step as you go.
There are good views from near the location across to Truleigh Hill, Devil’s Dyke, Jack and Jill Windmills and the Wolstonbury Chalk Pits, and the tallest native tree in England (a beech) is growing on Newtimber Hill, though I have not yet found it, so please let me know where it is if you find it. There is also a 1000 year old lime tree with 40 separate trunks somewhere here according to the Trust, but I haven’t found that either.
The cache is an old ammo can I was given by the British Army when working in Sierra Leone during the Ebola Crisis in late 2014. It is placed with kind permission of the National Trust Warden for Newtimber Hill and Saddlescombe Farm.
Congratulations to Cavespiders for the First To Find on 29 November 2015.
