Geocache Description:

A series of caches meant to provide a little information about my favourite equine - the donkey:-) All of the donkeys in the photos on the cache pages can be found living nearby at The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada.

Winter can be a difficult time for donkeys in Canada. The long, cold season means that proper shelter needs to be in place to help keep the donkeys warm. A properly insulated barn with heat lamps is a good start. Allowing the donkeys the choice of being indoors or out on nicer days and having the ability to enclose them entirely inside during particularly stormy weather is also necessary.  Donkeys do not have water repellent hair like other equines and so will feel the cold and wet to a greater degree than mules and horses. Many donkeys may even need the help of a winter 'jacket' or blanket for a good part of the winter season.

The new south side of the 'donkey house' has been converted into a shelter for the miniature donkeys, complete with an indoor section with heat lamps that can be closed off during storms and a sheltered outdoor area with access to the paddocks.
