Geocache Description:

Bodmin St Lucy's Day

EVENT INFORMATION: This event is a celebration of St Lucy, and will be held from 1400-1430 hours on Sunday 13th December at King Doniet's Stone. This location is unique as it marks the historic location for the 'King of Cornwall', and as St Lucy's day is the 13th December, and she is associated with saffron, what better way to celebrate her day, and link it with our glorious county, than to come together to eat cake !. We will be at the location during the given times, and invite you to come along and join us for a slice of saffron cake - all supplied !

St Lucy's Day
LOCATION INFORMATION: Standing on Bodmin Moor, close to Trethevy Quoit and the Hurlers circle, are the granite bases of two late 9th century crosses. The crosses themselves were probably wooden and slotted into the sockets on top of the stones. One of them, known as King Doniert's Stone (or in Cornish - Men Myghtern Doniert) commemorates the last Cornish King Durngarth. Dungarth (Duncan in English) is thought to be a descendant of the early 8th century King Gerren, and is said to have held his court in Liskeard (Lis-Cerruyt). It's inscription in Latin, "Doniert Progavit Pro Anima" translates as "Doniert ordered (this cross) for (the good of) his soul" and asks for prayers for the king who drowned during a hunting expedition in 875/6 AD. .
