Geocache Description:

Due to so many cache hopping the containers this one keeps getting messed up as a multi. Will leave it posted as is but signing the log at WP1 satisfies a find for this cache.Quick and easy Multi. Posted coords will be a cache with the coords to the final.

This cache is part of the Lighthouse Geo Art Series. This series was inspired from always seeing Fond Du Lacs' iconic Lighthouse. Each cache page will have a different fact relating to lighthouses, a lighthouse that is in WI, or something else lighthouse related.

  • All caches are placed on the side of the road at various poles, sign posts, guardrails. And if you have all the cache puzzles solved, all 100 caches can be done in a power trail.
  • There are 8 clues needed to solve for the final cache. Each clue has two caches, so you might find the same clue twice. If running as a power trail and moving each cache to the next. PLEASE LEAVE the clue caches in their original spot in case they go missing, it will help me keep track.
    • All Clues are written on the outside of the pill bottle, on the cap, on the inside of the cap, and on the top of the log sheet.
  • If you want to finish the trail of caches close to the final I would recommend starting/ending around the Lighthouse Geo Art Series #'s 76 and 71
  • If you need a cache container to help do a power run you can find some in my 100th Hide cache. I might place another one out there as well to store caches in. Feel free to replace them if you deem it is missing (ie at least a 5min search) Please make note though in case it was a clue cache.
  • Please drive and park responsibly. Pull off on the side of the road, use your flashers, keep your eyes open. Please be safe!

Cache Fact

How are lighthouses identified at night?
You can’t see the colors or patterns on a lighthouse at night, but you can see the light (if it isn’t foggy). Each lighthouse has a different light pattern at night. Some lights are steady and show continuously. Some lights have a flash pattern that identifies them. The light pattern is called a light signature or light characteristic.

The invention of the Fresnel lens was a major discovery in helping create the light in lighthouses. A Fresnel lens consists of glass prisms and lens that bend and reflect the light. Some lenses are stationary and produce a steady light. Some lenses are mounted on a rotating frame. Fresnel lens were pieces of ground glass, cut and polished and arranged in a way that collects and redirects the light into a beam. As the lens turns, light is focused through panels that create a beam and give the impression that the light is flashing off and on.

The light characteristic at Piedras Blancas varied over the years. At one time it was a double flash every 15 seconds. Today it is a single flash every 10 seconds. Mariners carried a book called a light list that described the daymarks and light characteristic for each lighthouse so they could determine where they were.

Fresnel lens came in a variety of sizes. The smaller ones were used along bays and harbors. The larger ones produced the brightest light and were used along the seacoast, where the light had to be seen farther. The Piedras Blancas lighthouse lens was a first order. Below is a representation of the relative sizes of the 6 major orders
