Geocache Description:

This cache celebrates the long lost Cottage of Content, which was a Public House in Merstham. It was situated on the High Street approximately 200 yards from the Feathers hotel. It was an alternative location where locals could be found partaking of beer and other refreshments! It closed its doors to the public in the 1960s.

This photo was taken at the time of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887. The porch marks the entrance to the pub where the landlord, John Moore, would serve his customers with pints of Pagden's ale. This was brought over Epsom Downs by horse-drawn wagon, from the Hope Brewery in Church Street, Epsom, where beer had been brewed since 1769. The brewery no longer exists.

The Cottage of Content (1887)

This photo shows the cottage in 1904. The landlord at this time was Richard Pocock and he was serving his customers from a single storey addition at the front of the building.

The Cottage of Content (1904)

This photo shows the cottage decorated with bunting to celebrate the coronation of King George V in 1911. James Arthur Bish was the landlord at this time and he looked after his customers until 1923.

The Cottage of Content (1911)

Finally, this photo shows the cottage decorated for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The landlord at this time was a Mr J J Wilkinson.

When you have located the cache please take care retrieving it, as it's hidden in a muggle area, so keep an eye out for those muggles, they will pop up from everywhere. Also, the cache is small, delicate and only contains a log, so you will need to bring your own pen or pencil and you may even need a pair of tweezers to retrieve the log. Finally, when you've finished please put everything back exactly as you found it.

Finally, if you find the cache on the day it’s published (1st January 2016) you can earn your Hello 2016 souvenir too
