Geocache Description:

This old cabin is below the intersection of the Gravel Pit (Rainbow) trail and the Glen Haven trail. You can hike to it from either trailhead.

Malmberg and Erickson were two Scandanavian families who homesteaded 160-acre parcels on the north side of Crosier Mountain. This cabin dates from the 1890s. They operated a dairy in The Orchard (now known as Piper Meadows) that supplied milk to Estes Park, and later sold that operation to Harry Piper around 1917. This old cabin is thought to belong to Matts Malmberg; it's on what was his land at the time and he was known to be a hunter. However, there is some evidence that it might have belonged to a man called Solomon Hackali.

Some newspaper articles list this as Crosier's cabin, but he lived over in Crosier Park. I believe you can still find his old fireplace if you know where to look. I might put a cache there someday, if I can find it.

Please put the cache back how you found it to keep it less visible to hunters or casual passersby on the trail.

This cache is part of a geotrail of historical caches in the Glen Haven area. Retrieve the codes from the 14 physical caches and find the virtual to receive a commemorative geocoin. The cache list can be found here: Historic Glen Haven GeoTrail.
