Custer, SD is the oldest town in the Black Hills. Gold was discovered in near by French Creek in 1874 by the Black Hills Expedition led by Lt. Col. George A. Custer and the 7th Cavalry
Main Street was made wide enough for a team of oxen pulling a wagon to be able to turn completely around in the mid 1800's.
Gold Discovery Days celebration and festival is held the last full week in July. The Custer County Courthouse Museum is a must to discover more about Custer City.
