The boundries of the northern end of Pointe Coupee Parish are formed by the Mississippi River and the Atchafalaya River, with levees along both sides of the parish. In 1954 the Morganza spillway was completed, with a levee running from the Mississippi to the Atchafalaya, forming a "bowl" or island that is now known as UPPER Pointe Coupee. This levee was built with a set of locks that could be opened to drain the "bowl" and closed if needed. These locks were the only means of drainage for the the entire upper portion of the Parish, and never were closed. Fast forward to 1973 when the gates of the Morganza spillway were opened for the first time due to the high waters of the Mississippi river. As the waters in the spillway rose, it started flowing into the bowl through the locks that were supposed to be closed. As the Corps realized what was happening, they attempted to close these locks only to discover that a log jam was not letting it happen. After flooding the entire lower part of Upper Pointe Coupee, the jam was removed and the locks were closed. Now the "bowl" was completely surrounded with high water with no way to keep from flooding the entire area, so some Diesel powered portable pumps were put into action to remove some of the excess water. After this the Corps installed a pumping station for use during heavy rains and times of the Morganza Spillway being opened. As you stand at GZ, you can see the Atachafalaya river, the pumping station and further behind this, the little set of locks that couldn't be closed. Since Bob was nice enough to let us place this cache on his land, we'll name it Bob.
