Geocache Description:


The South Clunes Mine commenced operating in 1859. Starting as a reef mine it was found that an alluvial drift ran through the site and this became their main source of gold. A tramway ran from this site down to the crushers at the end of William Street. The steep valley giving easy gravitational feed of the quartz to the battery on Creswick Creek. The company amalgamated with the Lothair Mine in 1885 and became the South Clunes United Company. (Source: Clunes Tourist and Development Company).
