At age 20, John Hatter enlisted as a Private in Company B of the 11th Alabama Infantry Regiment on June 11, 1861. He saw action at Seven Pines, Manassas #2, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Salem Church, and then at Gettysburg.
Private Hatter survived the Battle of Gettysburg, but it was the last time he was involved in a battle for the rest of the war. He was in and out of hospitals after being wounded. The physician that treated him at the General Hospital at Selma noting on his service record that he complained of Vulnes Sclopeticusn, a disability that resulted in him being sent home to Alabama.
