This cache is a remake of the original "Lest We Forget (GC13F4J)" by Done and Dusted, the subsequent "Lest We Forget 2 (GC37BJ8)" by the Seagnoid, and more recently "Lest We Forget 3 (GC3BE64) also by the Seagnoid.
Unfortunately, the hosts of all three previous versions experienced the same gravitationally-enhanced fate... I was tempted to hide version 4 in the remaining stump of v3, but decided to add my own style to the new hide instead.
This park was originally a quarry for the local railway (see Manawatu rail: Terrace End). In 1937 it was sold to the City Council who developed it into a community park and named it Fitzroy Park. It was then renamed Memorial Park in 1950 to remember those who perished in WWII.
Drive on in for parking and facilities, including a children's swimming pool, playground area, roller-skating rink, and pond with ducks to feed. Numerous outdoor tables and seating as well as a fixed BBQ are provided for family picnicking. It can be quite busy on a nice summer's day.
The main gate is open from 8.00am to 6.00pm during winter and 8.00am to 9.00pm at other times. It is possible however to access the area by foot at any time of the day.
