OReviewer: From the Northern Region Office, New Jersey State Parks Department:

Over a year ago New Jersey enacted a policy that all geocachers must obtain a permit to have their cache on State Park property. We have informed all geocaching host that this is their responsibility and have given them ample time to go about getting their permits. At this time, over a year later, there are still several caches that haven’t complied.

We ask that as the land managers for the attached properties we would like to have these illegal caches removed.

Based on the list provided by the state, I am forced to archive this listing. If you have a permit, get a permit or don't believe your cache is on state park/forest land, please contact me via email. Make sure you include the GC code.

If you don't plan to get a permit, please remove your geocache so it doesn't become geo-trash.

Geocache Description:

Matapin Rock is a scenic overlook in Ramapo Mtn State Forest. This cache is near the overlook.
Park on Skyline Drive next to the Oakland town leaf dump. There is some sort of transmission station there with parking for 3-4 cars. Do not block the gate.

Take the combined Hoeferlin (yellow blazed) and Cannonball (red blazed with C in middle) trails to the top of the hill. There, a short, unmarked trail will lead you to Matapin Rock.
The trailhead can be caught at the end of the guardrail adjacent to the parking area at N41.03.592,W74.15.059.

It's a short walk to a nice overlook. The cache is hidden nearby.

For those looking for a longer hike, make this part of the Hiker Series. If you'd like to do this, here is the recommended route. If you do, it's an excellent hike that should take you 4-6 hours to complete.

Park at the upper parking lot on Skyline Drive. You will see the orange blazes for the Schuber Trailhead across the street, near the Camp Tamarack sign. Starting at the Schuber trailhead take it to Cache 1, then on to the white blazed Millstone Trail and Rocky Slide Gulch for Cache 2. Continue on the white (Millstone)trail to the yellow trail, cross the road then on to cache 3.

After finding Cache 3, continue on the Schuber/Yellow trail, then make a left left onto the Old Guard trail (white blaze with green leaf in center) and continue to Cache 4. After finding cache 4, continue on the Old Guard trail, cross the pipeline cut, then the Cannonball (red w/"C") and Hoeferlin (also yellow)trails.

You'll then reach the escarpment, where you will see nice views of the Wanaque Reservoir through the trees. Here the Old Guard joins the red blazed, Ringwood Ramapo Trail. Follow it to Cache 5. After finding this one continue on the the Old Guard. You'll cross the Hoeferlin again and reach the Cannonball for the second time. Make a right here and head to Cache 6.

The Cannonball soon joins the Hoeferlin and they eventually cross a gravel road together and cache 7 is close by. They then reach Skyline Drive before heading back into the woods beyond the yellow gate. After passing the gate, continue on the Hoeferlin/Cannonball. The Cannonball will split to the right. Stay on the Hoeferlin and take it Cache 8, then back to your car.
