DRUNKARD'S PATH

Another quilt block rumored to have been used in the Underground Railroad quilts. It's meaning was to tell slaves escaping to freedom that they needed to use a zigzag course to elude the slavers and their dogs.
Although the Underground Railroad quilts are thought to be fictional, the quilt block was definitely used by women to express their feelings about prohibition. Women during this time were not permitted to vote, so the Drunkard's Path pattern expressed their disapproval of alcohol. The Temperance Union colors of blue (symbolizes water - the purest drink) and white (purity) were most often used for these quilts.
